Personal Statement
I am a setter with MadTown Juniors and a rising senior on Edgewood High School's varsity team (Madison, WI). The biggest challenge I have to overcome as a setter is my height. I am undersized but height doesn’t interfere with my ability to play volleyball. It only interferes with the first impression I make on coaches. I have to overcome this bias every time I step onto a court for a new coach or at a new camp. It does not make me feel defeated. It makes me feel empowered. I accept that I have to be twice as good to get noticed. It has also made me focus on increasing my vertical. I am one of the best blockers on my team because I can jump. I love that I surprise my competitors because they don’t see me coming!
