We caught up with UMASS Dartmouth Lacrosse Coach Ryan Murphy for a discussion about the their lacrosse program and what he looks for when recruiting student-athletes.
What are you most excited about with regards to your program?
New facilities and Team Culture
How would you describe your coaching style?
Competitive. I keep score in almost every drill to make players compete at all times.
What jumps out at you when recruiting? What do you look for in a player?
Playing in-between the whistles
What are your “pet peeves” when recruiting?
Players not riding/playing defense. Taking plays off.
What is the best way interested student-athletes should get in touch with you?
Email or phone call
What should student-athletes avoid in their messaging to college coaches?
Avoid leaving an incomplete message.
Your message should contain the following.
Coaches email and phone
Tell us about your transition from lacrosse player to lacrosse coach.
My summer job from when I was a freshman in college was coaching club teams. I was lucky enough to have the time to coach with my professional life. I spent two years as a head coach at two different High Schools, then 1 year as an assistant at Mass Maritime Academy.
What’s your recruiting strategy going into an event? After an event?
When going into an event I try and line up players I want to see. Then for players I do like, I make sure to introduce myself and put a face to a name. After an event I follow up with an email or phone call to players I spoke to at the event and Players I have interest in.
Once again, thanks to Dan for his time, and best of luck to UMASS Dartmouth this season!
