Introduction

We caught up with Salve Reinga Lacrosse Coach Dan Parks for a discussion about the Salve Regina lacrosse program and what he looks for when recruiting student-athletes.

The Conversation

What are you most excited about with regards to your program?

Our youth and support from the university which gives us an opportunity to grow

How would you describe your coaching style?

Encouraging and supportive but demanding/high expectations

What jumps out at you when recruiting? What do you look for in a player?

Decision making skills, poise, and teamwork

What are your “pet peeves” when recruiting?

“Individual” play

What is the best way interested student-athletes should get in touch with you?

E-mail; fill out recruit questionnaire on our athletics website

What should student-athletes avoid in their messaging to college coaches?

Having parents write the messages for them. We want to hear from you.

Walk us through your timeline when recruiting a student athlete

Unofficial/Official transcript end of Junior year. Then send film/highlights, and contact high school/club coaches, and/or watch play.

What kind of players succeed at your program?

Players with high lax IQ, often from good high school or club programs

Tell us about your transition from lacrosse player to lacrosse coach.

I played for the same program/head coach that I coach under now

What’s your recruiting strategy going into an event? After an event?

I try to see every team play. If that is not possible, I make it a point to watch teams with players that have already contacted me or our other coaches. Request players that have not been in contact with us yet to fill out a recruit questionnaire on our website.

Once again, thanks to Dan for his time, and best of luck to Salve Regina this season!
