We caught up with St. John’s University Men’s Lacrosse Coach Terry Mangan for a discussion about the St. John’s lacrosse program and what he looks for when recruiting student-athletes.

What are you most excited about with regards to your program?
I’m very excited about how our guys are growing and getting a little better every day. They are great teammates to each other and love competing!
How would you describe your coaching style?
Energetic with positive reinforcement
What jumps out at you when recruiting? What do you look for in a player?
I like players that stand out! That can happen in a number of ways – size, athleticism, skill, toughness, energy, leadership
What are your “pet peeves” when recruiting?
HS players that put lacrosse first and hope all of the other stuff will just work out.
What is the best way interested student-athletes should get in touch with you?
By sending an email to me, or having their club or HS coach give me a call
What should student-athletes avoid in their messaging to college coaches?
I like when players send thoughtful emails rather than generic emails that just hope for the best. Tell coaches why you would sincerely be interested in their school
What kind of players succeed at your program?
The ones that love the game! Love it enough to work at it when no one is watching. The ones that are always trying to get better, and can handle the highs and lows of college life. Players with low motors will not succeed!
Tell us about your transition from lacrosse player to lacrosse coach
When I got a change to coach a middle school team after I graduated from college, I knew I did not want to do anything else
