Introduction

We caught up with Fairfield University Men’s Lacrosse Coach Colin Hulme for a discussion about the Fairfield lacrosse program and what he looks for when recruiting student-athletes.

You can find our conversation below.

The Conversation

What are you most excited about with regards to your program?

We return about 90% of our starting lineup from last year, while getting to infuse a talented class of freshman. Competition will be at an all-time high for spots which will only create better results.

What jumps out at you when recruiting? What do you look for in a player?

Athleticism will always be an important indicator for us, a player’s ability to run, cut, move, turn hips on defense, etc. All those are natural talents that can be built upon, but we also pay a lot of attention to players’ lacrosse skill sets. Do they move their feet well when catching and throwing, are their hands quick on a shot or soft when catching; on defense, do they approach with their stick out and break down? How hard a player competes is always a big factor, too. From the first whistle to the last, how hard to they work for ground balls, riding, clearing, and all the in-between things.

What are your “pet peeves” when recruiting?

Players who know they are good at one thing and only try and do that one thing. I know you can run down the right alley and shoot, but what really separates you? Also, players who are quick to point fingers or are unwilling to work to make up for a mistake.

What is the best way interested student-athletes should get in touch with you?

Email is typically the easiest way. Start with a short introductory note, make sure to include all pertinent information – age, grad class, position, high school, club team, where you will be playing during the recruiting periods, link to a short highlight film, and contact information for your coaches.

What should student-athletes avoid in their messaging to college coaches?

The quickest way to get us to ignore your message is to incorrectly label our school or our names. Messages that simply state “this is my name and here is my film” also don’t show a ton of interest on your part. That being said, a five paragraph letter is also not the way to go. We get hundreds of emails a day and do not have time to read through it all. Make sure you proofread your message as well. It typically doesn’t look good when you have bad grammar and misspelled words. That just shows lack of attention and, again, lack of care.

Once again, thanks to Colin for his time, and best of luck to Fairfield this season!
